Assembly Studios

Blending innovative water feature design with sustainable community spaces.

Located on the historic site of a former General Motors Assembly Plant, Assembly Studios in Doraville, Georgia, is a bold redevelopment that merges world-class film production facilities with community-driven public spaces. Owned by Gray Television, this 135-acre campus is designed to support major motion picture and television productions through 19 sound stages, mill space, and production offices. What sets Assembly Studios apart is its thoughtful integration of public amenities with sustainable design, creating a destination that balances the creative industry with everyday urban life.

Feature Fountain at Assembly Studios Park

At the forefront of the studio campus lies a vibrant four-acre public park, designed as a welcoming greenspace for visitors, employees, and filmmakers. At its centerpiece is a striking pond-based water feature that doubles as a stormwater retention system, capable of detaining runoff for over 50 acres of storm basin. The fountain is equipped with nine transformer jets, all powered by fountain systems and control panels supplied by Fountain People. These dynamic jets can alternate between tall, narrow vertical sprays and wide fan-like displays, enhanced by color-changing lights supplied by Fountain People that add energy and visual appeal to the space throughout the day and into the evening.

The fountain not only offers a vibrant focal point for the park but also acts as a cinematic backdrop for productions filmed on-site. At the same time, its stormwater function supports the site’s infrastructure and sustainability goals, offering detention capacity without sacrificing beauty or functionality.

Reflecting Basin & Stormwater Retention

On the opposite end of the Assembly Studios campus lies a one-acre reflecting basin, also engineered with stormwater detention in mind. Designed to provide up to five feet of stormwater storage volume, the pond can also be drained for specialty film scenes, including those involving small vehicles and other unique settings. It also supports the site’s fire safety infrastructure.

Fountain People supplied essential water feature equipment for this installation, including pump skids and control panels, ensuring smooth performance whether the basin serves infrastructure needs or cinematic storytelling.

A Lasting Investment in Georgia’s Film and Public Space Future

The first phase of the Assembly Studios campus development is expected to be an economic engine for Doraville and the greater Atlanta area. By combining cinematic infrastructure with accessible public amenities, the project represents a long-term investment in both the entertainment industry and the local community. Thousands of jobs, both during construction and permanent roles, are expected to be created as Assembly Studios continues to grow and evolve.

Fountain People was proud to collaborate with landscape architect HGOR and installer Pfists, Inc. on this project. Together, the team brought to life a forward-thinking vision that combines art, infrastructure, and community.
